Is Medellin, Colombia safer now?

Hi, i'm going for an internship in Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia. While Medellin is safer than decades ago, i still keep hearing news of killings and increasing crime rate in the area. Can you help me sort this out? I need locals to tell me the REAL condition of your place. My parents are scared as ever. They just need me to be in safe place. I am from Manila, Philippines, female and 21 years old!
