Why did King George III's sons William, Edward and Adolphus have to produce heirs?

I am writing a report on Queen Victoria, and I am trying to understand why William, Edward, and Adolphus, King George III's sons had to get married and produce heirs so quickly. Why couldn't they just take the throne?
