Why was Electoral fusion outlawed in the United States and now only legal in seven states?

You make a good point. I've often wondered why we don't have many smaller parties like they do in Israel for example. Guess this is the reason. Is it a good idea to ban it? I look at Italy and the many governments that collapsed since World War II and I don't think fusion is a good idea.
